The grilled cheese, a comforting and indulgent recipe that’s easy to make

The grilled cheese is simply a hot cheese sandwich. A simplified version of the croque-monsieur, it consists of bread and cheese for the most classic. But we’re not being classic! Proof of that with our ultra-indulgent version featuring shallots and caramelized apples with Comté. The mix of sweet and savory flavors is simply addictive. To be devoured for a no-fuss dinner, perhaps with a soup of your choice!

You’ll see, the grilled cheese is really the ultimate comfort. Plus, it’s super easy and quick to make, even if this recipe asks for a tiny bit of simmering (promised, it’s worth it). If you don’t have shallots, you can replace them with mild onions that pair perfectly with the gentle sweetness of the apple. Sage isn’t mandatory but is highly recommended for bold and original aromas. We chose Comté for this recipe because it provides the perfect balance to counterbalance the sweetness of the shallots and caramelized apples. From the first bite, you’ll be hooked!

Ingredients for 2 servings

– 100 g salted butter
– 1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil
– 2 shallots, finely chopped
– 1 apple, diced
– 1 tablespoon balsamic cream
– 3 fresh sage leaves
– Salt, pepper
– 3 cl red wine
– 6 cl beef stock
– 4 slices of bread
– 100 g Comté

Preparation of the best Comté grilled cheese

1. Heat a pan over medium heat with the butter and olive oil. Add the shallots and the apple and sweat for about 5 minutes.

2. Add the balsamic cream, the sage, salt, pepper, the red wine and the beef stock. Lower the heat and cook for about 10 minutes, until the mixture becomes almost syrupy and glossy. Set aside.

3. Butter the slices of bread on both sides. In a pan with a little butter, lay two slices of bread and spread half of the previous preparation on each slice.

4. Add a generous layer of Comté shavings shaved with a peeler on top, then cover with another slice of bread.

5. Cover with a lid and let brown for about 2 minutes. Flip, cover again and let brown for another 2 minutes.

6. Serve immediately and enjoy while hot!
